on May 14, 2015 at 11:20 amGood Blog. I bag every other mulching I do, however. I think it’s a good idea to bag on the first mowing of the year and then just leave the mulch clippings in the cut grass to give the old grass some “food”.
It also depends on how much property is mowed. Down here in Joppatowne, I can get by without the bag on occasion. A bigger lawn would require a large number of lawn bags and is just not practical. Mulching is better for the environment and keeps all those lawn bags out of the landfills.

on May 14, 2015 at 11:57 amI mulch only. I mulch the leaves in fall time. I put down a chemical winterizer in fall also. I put down Milorganite end of May, middle of July and end of August. I spot treat the weeds when needed. If you want to kill the weeds dont cut the grass first then spay. Its not getting enough contact with the weed leaf. Also let the weed get big leafs then spay the the weed killer. Let it work for 2 days then cut. Do this when it will stay dry for 2 days. Dont cut your grass less than 3 inches. My grass dont grow like mad but its still thick. I have neighbors that spend twice as much as me on lawn services to do the full season chemical way. One bags every time it’s unbelievable all the work he does bagging then running to a compost site. The other has a toro and only mulches he thinks I have a different type of grass. Its the iron in Milorganite that makes it dark green. Most on my street cut the grass to short and wonder why they have so many dandelions efery spring spaying with kids running around. Its just incredible what people go through and yet my yard is thicker, does not dry out as fast, does not grow super fast, darker color. I tell people I have an army in the ground that will eat leaves and mulch. Worms.

on May 14, 2015 at 12:09 pmI’ve been mulching for at least a decade, especially in Autumn. The ground up leaves and grass provide for my “winterizing” fertilizer and I have no need to use anything additional.
Because of the thatch buildup I aerate periodically to allow rain so soak into the soil. The thatch prevents unnecessary water loss from the soil and I haven’t had to water. The water and fertilizer savings are incentive for me not to bag.

on May 14, 2015 at 2:40 pmGot about 3 acres to cut so I side discharge..not sure if mulching or bagging is an option for us. Maybe a bunch of goats to chew it up, but then you need a donkey to protect the goats, and a fence to protect the donkey, and a gun to protect the fence…so we side discharge.

on May 14, 2015 at 2:54 pmI bag it and put it on my compost heap. It makes a very good compost especially with the leaves in the autumn. In the height of the summer mulching is the order of the day, for the retention of any moisture.

on May 14, 2015 at 11:36 pmI side discharge until plants are in the garden, then bag the grass and use to mulch the plants. Mowing before there are any seed heads on the grass and not until the weed killer has been rained on a number of times. Once the garden is mulched I return to side discharge. In the fall I bag the leaves and hand dig them into the garden. I create a furrow and fill it with leaves then cover them, in the process creating the next furrow. The soil is beautiful and not compacted but loose allowing air and water to get easily into the soil. Have been doing it since I was at my first job where a master gardener showed me how to build up the soil.

on May 5, 2017 at 8:50 pmTry scraping the deck clean all the grass out from underneath it that builds up make sure your blades are Sharp and the deck is completely clean make sure you don’t need new belts to spend the blades cleaning the deck helps remove the trail any machine will do this if you don’t clean under the deck

on May 5, 2017 at 12:42 pmWe have six Llamas and as soon as I start up the lawn tractor they come running and stand by the fence because they know they are going to get a treat of the grass clippings. The lawn is Kentucky Blue Grass which is a lot different than the pasture grass. They know it is different and enjoy the change. The same with the leaves in the fall. They’ll eat thos , too.

on May 5, 2017 at 9:06 pmI have a Husqvarna HD775HW rear discharge, always discharge except when I need clippings for the compost bins. Leaving the rear door down to mulch just causes the mowed clippings to pack up inside the deck and requires mower shut-down and manual removal of clippings. Was even worse before the drive broke and I removed all drive components plus the belt protection cover.

on May 6, 2017 at 6:52 amThis is how I view this issue, Mowing your grass is like getting a haircut just leave it lay where it falls and then Good Ole Mother Nature can take care of it. Same thing with the leaves mother nature put them there mother nature can take care of them.
